Uber debuts in the crypto ecosystem. The mobility giant completed a corporate treasury management pilot using blockchain technology alongside financial institutions HSBC , Franklin Templeton , Tradeweb , and custody firm Fireblocks . Through this initiative, developed on the Canton Network , Uber used tokenized bank deposits issued by HSBC to purchase shares in a tokenized money market fund from Franklin Templeton on a Thursday and settle the position the following Sunday.
The transaction enabled the company to generate returns on idle cash outside traditional banking hours, earning approximately 1.5 additional days of yield . This use case illustrates the feasibility of settling tokenized real-world assets ( RWA ) 24/7 without clearing frictions, mitigating the opportunity costs that weekends entail in conventional corporate finance.
Following the validation of the technology, HSBC plans to expand this tokenized deposit service to other corporate clients, while industry experts project large-scale enterprise adoption over the next 18 months .
