Florida Senate Nominee Nixon Draws Lines With DSA, Dems
Show transcript
As we speak frequently on this program about an expanding map that Democrats are eyeing in this midterm cycle. Is Florida included in that? Are you getting resources that you need from the party at a national level? So yeah, so thank you for having me. I'm super excited to be on with you all today. And look, we're having conversations with folks in Washington about working on including us on that map. Everything is looking promising. We are up in the polls. We are in a dead heat with Ashley Moody. I actually is what we call her. Uh, we are also, um, continuing to fundraise and really build momentum. We have over 140,000 people that have signed up, and they filed their volunteer with our campaign, knocking on doors, making phone calls. And we are getting a lot of support. I'm currently right now at a desk event. Um, and I'm excited about, uh, you know, the opportunity to, to take this thing home and really make sure that the Democratic Party is seen as a very big tent. Not Representative Nixon is something that we should note for our audience that this is a special election that year. And if you win this, you actually come to Washington right away in November and would take part in the lame duck session. I'm curious your thoughts on how productive that might be. And when you come to Washington, would you support Chuck Schumer to be the leader of the Senate? Yeah, for sure. So I think it's important to know that I am worried that this lame duck session may not be lame. We know that we are going to flip the House and Senate, and we know that Donald Trump is going to do as much as possible to try to get through really bad bills in order to and, you know, keep cruelty being the goal of his administration. And so in regards to Chuck Schumer, me and Mr. Schumer, you know, me and Leader Schumer, um, we are set to have some good conversations. And I am going to assess everything. And I am really just focused on making sure the voters in Florida. Vote for me. Well, as we consider, then your conversations with the majority leader or the potential majority leader, currently minority leader in the Senate, and how you might fit into his wider picture of the Democratic caucus as a member of the DSA. Uh, representative. How would you characterize how distinct your candidacy is from that of other Democrats who may not subscribe to the ideas of democratic socialists? Where is it that you would break with the socialists and agree with more of the the rank and file? Yeah, for sure. So it is important to realize that not only did I join the DSA, I also joined Working Families Party. I also became a lifetime member of the NAACP. And this is bigger than three letters or three words. This is about making sure that we have access to affordable health care, fully funded public schools, and access to affordable housing. Look, I am not for abolishing prisons or defunding police. Why would I do that? Because I want Ashley Moody locked up and put in jail for stealing $10 million from sick kids from the Medicaid program. And so I do not agree with everything that the DSA agrees with. I don't agree with everything the Democratic Party agrees with. No one is fully 100% on board for any organization that they're a part of. But what is evident and true about what these organizations, the main through line is they are fighting for working families, and they want to end all of this chaos and corruption that's happening in Washington, DC. Yeah. You're referring to that Florida grand jury report from August that said the attorney general authorized a settlement agreement, right, that diverted $10 million in state funds, but no criminal charges were filed. Representative. No, you're no criminal charges. That's the same pace you're referring to. exactly? And it is it is bewildering to us that several attorneys had no idea who told who to do what. What is true is that $10 million should have gone to sick kids in the Medicaid program, and instead it was used to put into two political slush funds that was overseen by Ron DeSantis, his former chief of staff, who is now serving as the attorney general. Like that is corruption through and through, and the people of Florida are upset about it. They're frustrated, and they want to send Ashley Moody packing because of the what? We've we've invited Ashley Moody to the program representative. We'll follow up on that. You referred to her as I, Ashley. Is I evil? You know it is not evil. But we need to make sure that we are putting guardrails in place to ensure that it is. It is. It is helpful. Right? I am concerned about safety measures, security. I'm also concerned about some of the negative impacts it can have on the quality of life for Floridians. It could cause people's when in terms of data centers, it can cause folks as utility rates to go up. Uh, we also have seen, um, that it causes light pollution. Uh, and just different things. I am also concerned, really with jobs. Right. We are worried about jobs. People need to know whether or not AI is being used to help train them if they are trying to replace their jobs. Uh, if I, if used to hire people or fire people. Uh, also, we need to make sure that we're putting mechanisms in place. So that is not stealing people's data and information. And so these are the things that I'm concerned with. I am not anti innovation or technology. But I do believe we need to have some guardrails in place to ensure that it is a positive thing for Americans here in the country.
