Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares fell about 4% in premarket trading on Tuesday after the company warned that rising memory-chip costs would squeeze holiday-quarter margins, overshadowing better-than-expected earnings and record services revenue.
The decline followed Monday evening’s results, the first delivered by chief executive John Ternus. Investors focused on the cost outlook as Apple’s benefit from memory purchased at lower prices begins to fade, Reuters reported at 11:37 GMT.
The results showed continued demand for premium iPhones. The concern is how much of that spending will reach the bottom line as component costs rise and the company expands its AI services.

Why Is Apple Share Price Falling Today?
Apple’s earnings beat was followed by a weaker profitability forecast for its most important shopping quarter. Management expects gross margin of 45%–46% in the December quarter, compared with 47.9% in the September quarter. Services revenue is forecast to grow 8%–9%, below analysts’ expectations of 10.7%, according to Reuters.
Executives also warned that memory costs would keep increasing into next year. Purchasing commitments rose by $33 billion during the quarter as the company worked to secure supplies.
The combination explains the market’s response. Strong sales can support earnings, but higher production costs reduce the profit retained from each device. Investors now need to assess whether pricing and product demand can absorb more of that pressure.
Apple Q4 Earnings Beat Revenue and Profit Forecasts
Apple reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $114.48 billion and earnings of $2.10 per share. The quarter included a favourable tariff-refund effect of $0.05 per share. Gross margin also benefited by approximately one percentage point from those refunds, meaning the reported profitability figures received a boost that should be distinguished from operating performance.
For the full fiscal year, revenue reached a record $479 billion. The company generated $28 billion in quarterly operating cash flow and returned approximately the same amount to shareholders.
Those figures show the business remains highly cash-generative. Tuesday’s selling reflects concern about the next quarter rather than an absence of growth in the period just reported.
Apple China Revenue Misses Estimates
Greater China revenue came in at $17.54 billion, below the $18.75 billion expected by analysts surveyed by Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance reported.
Other divisions delivered a mixed performance. iPhone revenue reached $57.58 billion against expectations of approximately $56.48 billion, while Mac sales of $10.79 billion exceeded the $9.69 billion forecast. iPad revenue was $6.23 billion, and wearables generated $8.30 billion.
The China shortfall matters because investors are looking for broad demand to support the new product cycle. Stronger iPhone sales elsewhere helped the overall result, but weaker-than-expected regional revenue leaves another question for the holiday quarter.
The next report will provide a fuller indication of whether the latest devices can sustain demand across Apple’s major markets.
Apple Services Revenue Hits Record as Growth Outlook Slows
Services revenue reached an all-time high of approximately $31.6 billion, up 10% from a year earlier. Management said paid subscriptions exceeded 1.5 billion and the active device base surpassed 2.5 billion. Those customers provide a substantial market for subscriptions, payments and other services.
However, the December-quarter forecast points to slower services growth of 8%–9%. Management cited licensing and foreign-exchange headwinds, while the gross-margin outlook also includes costs associated with expanding Siri AI.
The distinction is important: record revenue demonstrates the business’s scale, while the forecast determines how quickly investors expect it to expand from here.
Apple Stock Outlook Depends on Holiday Margins
Apple expects total December-quarter revenue to grow 7%–10% year over year, with management forecasting the highest quarterly sales in company history despite supply constraints.
That leaves demand and profitability moving in different directions. A strong holiday season could lift revenue, while expensive memory and AI-related costs limit the earnings benefit.
For the shares, the next catalysts are evidence of product availability, sustained customer demand and any change in the cost outlook. Strong sales alone may offer limited reassurance if margins continue to narrow.
Why is Apple stock down after beating earnings?
Investors focused on the lower holiday-quarter margin forecast, rising memory costs and slower expected services growth.
Will Apple stock recover after earnings?
A recovery would depend partly on whether holiday sales and profitability exceed the expectations established by management’s latest forecast.
Did Apple miss earnings expectations?
No. Revenue and earnings exceeded forecasts, but China sales fell short and the outlook raised concerns about profitability.
