Amazon’s new Alexa tablets #Vergecast

I think this will almost immediately become the default Android tablet. Amazon is so big and successful and the price on these is really good. The 8 inch one starts at $229 and the like very fanciest 12-in one with the fancy screen is 549 bucks. Like you're looking at like $1,000 iPad territory for 550 bucks. And that's that's meaningful. And so unless these things have spectacular failure in them, I think they immediately become the obvious to buy for most. >> Now I have to ask the obvious question. Every piece of Amazon hardware, does it show you ads on the home screen by default? >> Good question. I do think it's possible that Amazon is going to just slather shopping all over this thing in a way that is really upsetting. One of the things they're going to do is make it so that you can just at any time be like, "How do I buy this?" And it'll look at what Alexa Plus will look at whatever's on the screen and put it in your Amazon cart. That's a real flow Amazon imagines. And >> yeah, >> that might be awful. Like, it really honestly might be awful in a way that is is kind of pernicious and off-putting. If it has just stayed on the right side of that line, I think these things are almost by default going to be a huge hit. >> Yeah. I mean, anybody with a kid who needs a plain tablet, this is the one you buy, right? If it's a nice piece of hardware that can run Disney Plus and then get your kids to immediately convert everything they're watching on Disney Plus into purchases on Amazon Prime, this is going to be a huge one for everyone. >> But that that's the danger with it. At 550 for the nice one, that price is subsidized. And the only way Amazon knows how to subsidize a price is with intrusive advertising. That is the entire experience of the Fire TV. I asked Panos about the price and he said something to the effect of, "I don't want to talk about how we got there." Um, do with that, do with that what you will.
