Frax has taken a step toward owning a piece of internet infrastructure. ICANN has published the company’s application for the .frax top-level domain as part of its 2026 program for new gTLDs. If it gets approved, .frax would work like .com or .org, at least in theory, and would be globally recognized in the domain name system. Frax is the first crypto company to have an application for its own top-level domain revealed by ICANN. That detail matters because crypto naming projects have mostly stayed separate from the traditional web’s root system.

Domains on Fraxtal, Reachable on the Web

Frax wants to connect standard internet domains with blockchain naming. Users would register and manage .frax names through Frax Name Service, or FNS, on Fraxtal, the company’s blockchain. The domains would still be accessible through the global Domain Name System. That means a .frax address could serve as both a regular web address and a blockchain-based name. It is a practical bridge, though the rollout details are not fully public yet.

Burn Engine and FRAX Supply

The plan also links domain registrations to the FRAX token. FNS registrations would contribute to the Frax Burn Engine, which permanently removes FRAX tokens from circulation. In simple terms, more domain activity could mean more tokens burned. Frax says this could help the token gain value as .frax domains become more popular. I think the mechanism is interesting, but demand for domains will decide whether it has a real effect. Burn mechanics can reduce supply, yet they do not guarantee price gains.

Payments for Websites and AI Agents

The domain push sits inside Frax’s broader financial infrastructure. That includes frxUSD, its stablecoin, and FraxNet, a network that connects financial institutions, fintech companies, and businesses for digital money and payments. Frax also plans to explore payment features for websites and AI agents using .frax domains. These could support the x402 standard, which lets software identify other parties, access services, and start stablecoin payments automatically. It is an ambitious idea, and it may take time to see how it works in practice.

The application was submitted with support from MarkMonitor, an ICANN-accredited corporate domain registrar. ICANN has published the .frax bid, but approval and launch are not confirmed. The final decision will depend on ICANN’s review process, and Frax will need to meet the program’s technical and financial requirements. For now, the application shows how crypto companies are trying to merge blockchain naming with the traditional internet, even if the outcome remains uncertain.
