Gold is stuck below $4,200, but a $10B short bet could trigger the next big move

Gold is struggling to reclaim $4,200, but traders may now be watching $10 billion more closely.

Spot gold rose 0.4% to $4,185.69 an ounce on Tuesday. At the same time, Jefferies estimates trend-following funds are roughly $10 billion net short.

High Treasury yields and a firm dollar still weigh on gold , but structural buyers have not disappeared. If those macro headwinds ease, positioning itself could amplify the next move.

A $10 billion short could become fuel for the next rally

Jefferies says the recent correction has produced a sharp split between speculative and structural demand.

Trend-following funds now hold about $10 billion of net short exposure, according to MarketWatch, after reducing long positions as gold retreated from earlier highs.

“Fast money has been selling while structural buyers have continued accumulating,” Jefferies said.

That distinction matters because short positions are not permanent sellers. If gold starts rising strongly enough, traders who sold futures may have to buy them back to close positions. That buying can accelerate an existing rally and turn bearish positioning into fuel for a squeeze.

The trigger does not necessarily need to be dramatic. A weaker dollar, falling Treasury yields or a convincing move through $4,200 could be enough to challenge momentum-driven positions.

Central banks are still providing a structural floor

The second test is whether long-term buyers keep absorbing supply.

China’s central bank added about 23 tonnes of gold in September, its biggest monthly purchase in nearly three years and its 23rd consecutive month of buying. China also imported more than 1,000 tonnes during the first eight months of 2026, worth a record $158.8 billion.

ING commodities strategist Ewa Manthey told CNBC that Chinese buying has become “an important source of structural support for gold prices.”

That support is different from speculative demand. Central banks buy for reserve diversification, making them less sensitive to short-term price swings than momentum traders.

Invesco analysts made a similar point this week, saying “structural support for gold remains in place” and expecting central banks to continue diversifying reserves into bullion.

That does not guarantee $4,000 will hold in another sell-off. It does mean speculative bears are pressing against a pool of demand that has remained persistent even as yields climbed.

CPI could decide whether the squeeze actually starts

The immediate catalyst is Wednesday’s US inflation report . Gold still faces a difficult macro environment because it produces no income.

High Treasury yields increase the opportunity cost of holding bullion, while a stronger dollar makes the metal more expensive for overseas buyers.

Markets currently assign about a 19% probability of an October Federal Reserve rate increase and roughly an 85% chance of a December hike.

Peter A. Grant of Zaner Metals told the Wall Street Journal that investors are watching CPI and other US economic data for clues about further Fed tightening.

A hotter inflation reading could push yields and the dollar higher, leaving short sellers comfortable and putting renewed pressure on gold.

A softer reading could pull yields lower, weaken the dollar and force some of the $10 billion bearish position to unwind.
