Tom Lee, chairman of Bitmine and chief investment officer at Fundstrat, says the next crypto rally may get a push from an old force: inherited wealth.
He points to IRS and Fundstrat estimates that $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion could transfer from 2026 through 2028. The recipients are younger, Lee argues, and they may have a higher appetite for crypto and equities than the people leaving the money behind. In a Monday statement, he said that wealth transfer is expected to support the coming crypto bull market. It is not a guarantee. The amount that actually lands in digital assets is unknown, but the theory is simple enough: younger investors may allocate more to crypto than older generations did.
Bitmine keeps adding ether
The comment came as Bitmine Immersion Technologies gave its latest holdings update. The company bought another 12,532 ether last week, worth about $32 million at Monday’s price. That lifted its total to 6,028,946 ether, worth roughly $15.3 billion. It now holds about 4.9% of ether’s 122.1 million token supply. Bitmine wants 5%, so it is short by around 76,000 ether. At last week’s pace, it could reach that level in about six weeks.
A 5% target and staking revenue
Lee said last week that Bitmine plans to stop accumulating ether once it hits the 5% mark. Since shifting to an ether-focused strategy in June 2025, the firm says it has bought ether every week. It has staked about 5.07 million ether, or 84% of its holdings. Bitmine projects about $336 million in annualized staking revenue at current yields. That figure depends on yields staying roughly where they are, so it can move.
Other possible drivers
Lee also flagged Wall Street’s growing use of blockchain to represent financial assets, AI applications, and crypto treasury companies that hold tokens for the long term. Those are all possible drivers of another rally, though each comes with its own uncertainties. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev made a similar point last month in an interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer, noting that more than $100 trillion in wealth could pass from older to younger generations over coming decades. The numbers are huge, but the path from inheritance to crypto demand is less clear. Still, Bitmine is acting like it expects demand to hold. Its weekly buying has brought it close to a self-imposed limit, and the company seems content to keep stacking until it gets there.
