Inside Gaza as Israel Fortifies New Bases

Since Israel has basically taken control of this area, it's been doing a lot of engineering work. There are around 30 bases in Gaza now that the Israeli military has established. We're here in an embedded with the Israeli military. Foreign journalists are currently prohibited from entering Gaza and covering the situation on the ground and reporting independently. Tightly controlled military embeds are currently the only way to access [music] Gaza. It's hard to describe how much devastation there is. You can see buildings in the distance after the yellow line. The yellow line divides Gaza into Israeli control and Hamas controlled [music] territory. All the bases kind of follow the trajectory of the yellow line and they can range in terms of their location between less than 2 km into the enclave to around 4 km in some areas. We've seen nine created since the ceasefire began and they [music] basically tend to follow a similar structure. They tend to be like rectangular often on high ground and they were encircled by these [music] concrete slabs. We couldn't see what was inside, but from satellite imagery we know [music] that they have temporary structures. Military officials tell me that the way they use these bases [music] is for ongoing security tasks. There's no real active combat going on between Israel and Hamas, [music] but Israel is still continuing to conduct air strikes in Gaza. Some military analysts told us that the bases were almost a reflection of the lack of strategy by Israel for [music] Gaza's future. What we saw are bases that were not permanent, but they [music] keep popping up, and it is unclear what Israel would like to do with the Gaza Enclave at the moment. The situation in Gaza, progress on the ceasefire, reconstruction, and Gaza's future governance is in limbo at the moment. [music] Officials tell us that it is stuck until after the Israeli elections, which are going to be held on October 27th. [music] And Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu is going to be fighting for his survival in those elections. [music] Reconstruction of Gaza and also withdrawal of Israeli troops is extremely unpopular with Natanya's base and also with his hardright allies.
