UPS Worker Missed Email, Letting China Get F-35 Parts
Show transcript
China has seized parts from an F-35 jet containing stealth technology after a United Parcel Service employee missed an email warning it not to route the shipment through Hong Kong. A person briefed on the incident told Bloomberg News that the logistics firm DSV warned UPS that the shipment must not go through China to comply with US rules that are designed to keep sensitive technology out of US adversaries hands. So, China now has a pilot's canopy and weapons bay doors that are coated with radar absorbing material that give it stealth technology, something China has not yet produced on its own. The Pentagon has asked China to return the parts, but it has refused. The shipment was originally meant to go from Sydney to San Francisco via Seoul and Taipei, but it was mistakenly rerouted to Hong Kong when it was late and they needed to speed up the delivery. Bloomberg reported on the seizure last month. But these new details about the missed email shed new light on an incident that has attracted congressional scrutiny. The F-35 is the world's most advanced fighter aircraft.
