The electric vehicle ( EV ) stock market remains fiercely competitive, with major players doing their best to balance luxury and affordability while promoting cutting-edge technology, most recently exemplified by Elon Musk’s “ flying Roadster .”

Naturally, the competitive environment has affected investors choosing between Lucid (NASDAQ: LCID) and Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN ) as well, as the long-term outlook of both companies largely depends on the success of the broader industry.

However, the two rivals operate on significantly different business models and represent diverging entry points to the market. Therefore, potential investors must weigh in more than one factor before committing, especially considering how weak their stock performances have been the past year.

Last year was not kind to Lucid shares

Notably, Lucid targets the premium luxury market, differentiating itself through vehicle efficiency and advanced technology. In addition, it designs related software and technology marketed for the premium automotive market.

For fiscal 2025, the carmaker reported approximately $1.4 billion in revenue – a growth of roughly 67.6% compared to $807.8 million recorded in the previous fiscal year. At the same time, thougg, the company recorded a net loss of approximately $2.7 billion.

The net loss highlighted the challenges the company faces trying to turn sales into profitability. Its balance sheet was also a source of concern, as management reported approximately $761.3 million in cash against $3.6 billion in debt. What’s more, the debt-to-equity ratio came in at nearly 198%.

As a result, LCID shares are down 70% year-to-date (YTD), trading at $3.13 at the time of writing, October 19.

Rivian stock was not spared either, but there’s a silver lining to the EV stock

Rivian focuses on commercial delivery vans, sport utility vehicles, and SUVs, and it remains known for its major business partnerships, including Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN ), which agreed to purchase up to 100,000 electric delivery vans under a deal announced in 2020.

Moreover, Rivian has also formed a joint venture with Volkswagen (FWB: VOW) to develop vehicle electrical architecture and software, which analysts hope can help Rivian share development costs and accelerate future vehicle programs.

Looking back, the car manufacturer reported relatively modest revenue growth for fiscal 2026 – approximately $5.4 billion, to be precise. This was an increase of around 8% from the previous fiscal year, but a recorded net loss of approximately $3.6 billion weighed on market sentiment.

However, the company still has a stronger cash position relative to Lucid. Indeed, Rivian reported approximately $5.3 billion in cash and $5.3 billion in debt, with negative operating cash flow of just $1.8 billion over the trailing 12-month period.

These numbers suggest Rivian may have greater flexibility to finance its operations and pursue future growth. Nonetheless, it must be admitted that funding remains a significant consideration among analysts and that RIVN shares have tanked 37% year-to-date.

Weighing the risks

As can be seen, toth Lucid and Rivian face significant financial challenges, ongoing losses, and intense competition in the EV market. However, Rivian appears better positioned for long-term growth.

Indeed, Lucid faces greater financial pressure due to its substantial cash burn and limited cash reserves, which further contribute to manufacturing risks. Accordingly, although its stock may appear cheaper, the uncertainty surrounding its profitability potential makes it a highly speculative investment.

In comparison, Rivian has a stronger cash position, a broader vehicle lineup, and more high-profile strategic partnerships with the likes of Amazon. It also delivered more than 42,000 vehicles in 2025, compared with fewer than 16,000 for Lucid, giving it a larger operating scale.

Lucid vs. Rivian: The final verdict

Overall, Lucid may appeal to investors seeking exposure to premium EV technology at a potentially lower valuation, but severe cash burn and financing issues make the investment risky.

Comparatively, Rivian looks like the stronger EV stock pick in the long term, but the investment case hinges on its ability to execute its production plans and control costs. In other words, neither stock is without significant risk, but Rivian appears to have a slight edge for long-term investors.
