TL;DR

Bitfinex says Bitcoin needs to reclaim $84,400, near the estimated $84,358 average ETF cost basis, before institutional fund demand is likely to strengthen meaningfully.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $228.4 million in weekly net outflows, leaving the average ETF cohort about 2.6% underwater at current prices.

Bitfinex sees $81,300 as the weekly range center, while leveraged positioning, weak apparent demand and a break below $79,821 would further increase downside risk.

Bitfinex says Bitcoin needs to reclaim $84,400 before spot ETF demand is likely to become a meaningful market tailwind again. In its latest Bitfinex Alpha report , analysts estimated the average ETF cohort cost basis at $84,358, leaving investors about 2.6% underwater after two consecutive weeks of outflows totaling $228.4 million. For readers following Bitcoin , the $84,400 level matters because a sustained recovery above it would return the average ETF holder to profit and could improve institutional demand.

Bitcoin’s $84,400 Level Becomes Key for ETF Demand

Bitcoin repeatedly traded below $81,300 between October 15 and 18, reaching lows of $79,821, $80,817, $80,820 and $80,700 before closing back above the level each day. Bitfinex said those recoveries prevented a sustained breakdown, but repeated intraday breaches weakened $81,300 as reliable support. The structure follows earlier pressure around Bitcoin’s $84,000 decision zone . Bitfinex now expects $81,300 to behave more like the center of the weekly range than a firm floor, with downside risk still present.

ETF flows remain a central weakness. U.S. spot Bitcoin funds recorded $228.4 million in net outflows for the week ending October 16, while the average institutional participant remained below the estimated ETF cost basis. Bitfinex said inflows historically slow significantly when Bitcoin trades beneath that level, making a reclaim of $84,400 an important condition for stronger buying. Recent Bitcoin ETF outflows have reinforced that fragile backdrop. The exchange is not predicting that ETF inflows will automatically resume at $84,400, but identifies the level as a threshold that could improve institutional positioning.

Leverage complicates the recovery. Bitcoin futures open interest rebounded 4.3% from October 12 to October 15 even as price declined, while positive funding returned during the subsequent move toward $83,000. Bitfinex said that pattern reflects leveraged traders chasing price rather than the sustained spot demand required for a healthier rebound. Meanwhile, the 10-year TIPS yield fell from 2.91% to 2.74%, but Bitfinex said weaker risk appetite may prevent lower real yields from supporting Bitcoin for now. Onchain data offered some support, with 1.25 million BTC held between $77,600 and $82,200, but 30-day apparent demand remained slightly negative at about 50,000 BTC. The setup echoes recent volatility in Bitcoin ETF flows . For Bitfinex, reclaiming $84,400 alongside stronger spot demand would signal improving conditions, while continued ETF outflows and a break below $79,821 would strengthen the bearish case.
