The first true magnetic USB-C port?

What's this? It's the magnetic USBC cable on the new Surface Laptop Ultra, which snaps itself right into place. Microsoft's calling this the first true magnetic USBC cable, unlike Apple's proprietary MagSafe or detachable USBC tips. It works because the port is tapered, so it can plug itself right in. Microsoft built magnets into the charger, too, so you can use the magnet end there and use the normal end to charge something else. Because this tapered end won't stay in your phone, but it's so easy to plug and unplug into a laptop. That's what this little robot arm is demoing. Microsoft won't say if it'll let other companies use or license the patent pending port, but product lead Sam Sanders told me Microsoft is hoping to lead the ecosystem here. So, don't be surprised if other laptops eventually come with one.
