If you’re wondering, “Do Uggs run big or small?” the short answer is that they generally run true to size. But because Ugg makes most of its boots and slippers only in whole sizes, finding the right fit gets a little more complicated if you’re between sizes. Whether you should round up or down depends on the specific style, the width of your feet, and whether you plan to wear thick socks.

As a lifelong New Englander, I consider Uggs a key part of my cold-weather uniform. They’re cozy, yes, but they’re also stylish — something surprisingly hard to find in winterwear. I reach for them throughout the frigid winter months and transitional seasons alike, pairing them with everything from jeans and activewear to sweats and sweater dresses.

Still, as a true 7.5, I was thrown off by Ugg’s whole-size-only sizing when I bought my first pair. After some trial and error with a few of the brand’s most popular styles, I finally have a good sense of how to find the perfect fit.

Do Uggs run big or small?

Overall, Uggs run true to size. If you wear a whole size, order your usual size. If you’re between sizes, consult the style-specific guidance below — some Uggs are better sized up for socks, while others can feel too roomy once the lining breaks in.

Ugg sizing advice

If you typically wear a whole size, order your usual size ; if you’re between sizes, use the guidance below based on the style and whether you plan to wear socks.

Ugg Classic Ultra Mini review and sizing

Rebecca Strong/Business Insider

Why we like it: This is one of Ugg’s bestsellers for a reason: It feels like a hybrid between an everyday boot and a house slipper. The ultra-low shaft and sleek silhouette also look less bulky — and more flattering — than some other styles. In our Ultra-Mini Ugg boots review , we found they make an excellent errand shoe and hold up remarkably well over time.

How it fits: I rounded up to an 8 so I could wear them with socks, which is how I plan to wear them. They fit like a glove that way. After a few wears, the sheepskin lining flattened slightly for a bit more room, but I still didn’t regret sizing up. When I wore them barefoot, though, my heel lifted slightly as I walked — a sign that my size 8 was a touch roomy, even before break-in.

Sizing advice: Buy your regular size in the Ugg Classic Ultra Mini. If you typically wear a half size, round up only if you have naturally wide feet or plan to wear thick socks; otherwise, size down.

What to know before buying: I found the Classic Ultra Mini a little more difficult to pull on without socks than the Classic Mini II . That may be because I have high arches, but the ultra-short shaft also creates a narrower, more restrictive opening. The pull tab helps, and since I typically wear mine with socks, it isn’t a real issue for me.

Ugg Tasman II review and sizing

Rebecca Strong/Business Insider

Why we like it: The Ugg Tasman II is easier to pull on than a traditional Ugg boot, thanks to its backless design. It’s the sort of slipper you can slide into right away for a quick errand, though you trade some heel security for that convenience.

How it fits: Though the size 8 worked in most of the other styles, this was the exception.

I had extra room in the back, which caused some heel movement while I walked.

I think a 7 would have worked better, particularly because the lining and insole seem to be flattening with wear and creating a bit of extra room. All that said, the 8 still feels comfortable, but I need to wear ultra-thick socks.

Sizing advice: I recommend buying your regular size if you wear a whole size, and rounding down if you’re in between — even if your feet are wider or you prefer to wear your slippers with thick socks.

What to know before buying: This slipper doesn’t have a pull tab — fortunately, though, it doesn’t need one. I was able to slide these on with ease right from the get-go. Keep in mind that the semi-structured collar may feel a little stiff at first, but it will soften up and mold to the shape of your foot after about a week or two of wear.

Ugg Classic Mini II review and sizing

Rebecca Strong/Business Insider

Why we like it: The Classic Mini II is a little easier to slide into than the Classic Ultra Mini, which I’ll chalk up to its straighter opening and slightly higher shaft. This is especially true with socks — I wouldn’t even need to use the pull tab, except I’m trying to avoid crushing the heel counter. While the lining is the same as the Classic Ultra Mini’s, the slightly higher shaft does keep my ankles warmer.

How it fits: Again, I opted for an 8 in the Classic Mini II. Overall, I think this was the right choice, but only because of my naturally wide feet — and because this is the pair I reach for on extra-frigid days, when I’m almost always wearing thicker socks.

Sizing advice: Go for your true size if you wear whole sizes. I’d only recommend sizing up in the Classic Mini II if you check all the same boxes as me: You typically wear a half size, your feet are even a little bit wide, and you know you’ll mainly be wearing them with thick socks. Otherwise, consider sizing down.

What to know before buying: These will most certainly stretch out — by up to a half size — so don’t buy a pair that already feels roomy. The taller shaft also makes them the warmer, more practical option when temperatures really drop.

Ugg Tazz II review and sizing

Rebecca Strong/Business Insider

Why we like it: The Tazz II is essentially a platform take on the classic Tasman slipper, with the same cozy Ugg feel but a little more height and a more substantial sole for wearing beyond the house. Of all four Ugg styles I tested, it was definitely one of the easiest to slip on. It does have a heel tab, but I’ve never needed to use it.

How it fits: As a true size 7.5, I sized up to an 8 to accommodate cozy socks — and found that they fit just as comfortably barefoot. Whereas the Tasman II felt slightly too long in the footbed and loose at the heel in the same size, the Tazz II fit just right. I also didn’t notice as much heel lift in these.

Sizing advice: If you’re between sizes, round up if you expect to wear them with socks most of the time. If you wear a half size but think you’ll mainly wear them barefoot, consider sizing down so you don’t risk more heel slippage once they break in. Otherwise, go for your regular size.

What to know before buying: The Tazz II offers a more secure fit than the Tasman II, at least in my experience, while still being exceptionally easy to slip on. It’s the better choice if you want that slipper-like ease without as much heel movement.

Ugg sizing FAQs

How should Uggs fit?

Uggs should fit comfortably snug across the top at first—so they aren’t too big after stretching out with wear. But your toes shouldn’t feel cramped, and your heel shouldn’t feel jammed. Remember: fit can vary by style.

Should you size up or down in Uggs?

If you wear a whole size, start with your usual size. If you’re between sizes, consider sizing down if you have narrow feet or tend to go barefoot, and sizing up if you have wider feet or tend to wear thick socks.

Do Uggs stretch out?

Classic sheepskin Uggs can stretch up to about half a size—however, this only applies to the width. The length will not expand, so make sure your toes have some room.

Do Ugg Classic Ultra Minis run small?

Not really—this style might feel tight initially, but stretches over time.

Are Uggs good for wide feet?

Yes—but if you have wide feet and you’re in between sizes, consider rounding up. Keep in mind, too, that certain styles may feel snug at first, but the lining compresses with time.

Do you wear socks with Uggs?

This comes down to personal preference—the sheepskin lining is naturally breathable, but wearing socks can help create a barrier to protect the insole and minimize odor.

What size Ugg should I buy if I’m between sizes?

Size up if you have wider feet and plan to wear your Uggs with thicker socks—otherwise, size down.
