Ethereum is drawing fresh attention from derivatives traders after analyst Joao Wedson pointed to a shift among large holders. In a recent note, Wedson said whales have been cutting long exposure and adding short positions. That change matters because it comes while concerns about selling pressure on $ETH are already building.

Open interest delta turns negative

Wedson shared data showing Ethereum’s 30-day and 180-day open interest delta are both negative. The Whale vs. Small Investor delta, which tracks the gap between large and small traders, is also negative. According to Wedson, this suggests big market participants have reduced long positions and moved more toward shorts over time. It is not a single-day panic signal, perhaps, but it does show a clear change in positioning. Small traders may still be leaning one way while whales choose another. That split can matter when open interest and borrowed positions are high.

High futures open interest raises liquidation concern

Even with that shift, total open interest in Ethereum futures remains large. Wedson put it at around 10.58 million $ETH. The high amount of positions backed by borrowed funds leaves Ethereum exposed to a new wave of forced liquidations, he warned. The issue is not just direction. It is the size of the positions sitting in the market. If price moves sharply, those positions can be closed automatically, which may push prices further. Wedson said the remaining open interest raises the risk that liquidations could trigger each other during volatile moves. That can create fast swings in both directions.

What traders are watching now

Traders are likely watching whether open interest starts to fall or stays elevated. A drop could mean borrowed positions are clearing out and conditions are cooling. A continued high reading may keep the market sensitive to sudden price changes. The whale versus small investor delta is another metric to follow. If it stays negative, it would support the view that large holders remain defensive. If it turns higher, the current caution may fade. For now, the data paints a picture of big players reducing bullish bets. That does not guarantee a price drop, but it does add a warning sign for a market already dealing with selling pressure concerns. This is not investment advice.
