It is a big day for the pound. The Bank of England decides on Thursday 5 November. Most traders expect a hike from 3.75% to 4.00%, says the Bank of England . Carry traders love this pair. The pound pays more interest than the yen. GBP/JPY has climbed into the decision. The chart below shows the climb. Stay with me. Let’s read it together.

Figure 1: GBP/JPY key levels in navy and red, 26 October to 5 November 2026.

Following the Climb

The line starts at the 26 October low of 210.18. Each dot is a key close or high. Then price creeps to 210.30. It reaches 210.80 after the BoJ held rates on 30 October. On 3 November it hit 212.00, a two-month high. It now trades near 212.17. The slope is gentle, not steep. Buyers are patient. They add slowly. Think of it as a slow, steady climb. Price held above the pivot every day, and dips were small. The red dashed line is the 212.00 resistance. The navy dashed line at 210.00 is the pivot. The shaded band down to 208.00 is support. Our GBP/JPY analysis set these levels.

Pound Strength, Yen Weakness

Two things push the cross up. UK inflation is still high, near 3.5%, as the Office for National Statistics shows. So, the BoE feels pressure to act. The BoJ, meanwhile, moves slowly. Its rate is 1.25%. That gap favours the pound. Always keep that gap in mind. Higher UK rates also make sterling deposits more attractive. The UK Budget on 28 October may add about 20 billion pounds of investment over five years. That helps growth. Our FTSE 100 forecast looks at the same BoE event from the stock market side.

Risks on the Other Side

The yen can fight back. The BoJ may raise rates in December. Japan has also warned about wild moves. If the BoE holds, or sounds cautious, the pound could fall. A fast yen rally can also drop this cross quickly. Pairs like this can move 100 pips in an hour. So, size your trade with care. Our USD/JPY note covers the BoJ side. For the UK side, Trading Economics tracks the Bank Rate and its forecasts.

Three Scenarios

Bullish: a close above 212.00 targets 215.00.

Bearish: a close below 210.00 targets 208.00.

Neutral: range between 210 and 212 after the BoE.

A quiet method to trade this is to wait for the Bank of England’s decision. Allow time for the initial reaction to the decision to subside. After that, look at the closing price in relation to both 212.00 and 210.00. Set your stop-loss on the opposite side of the price point where you entered the market. Do not try to rush into trading the news today.

The short-term impact of the BoE decision and the tone of the decision should influence the cross. The long-term impact of rate differentials and yen policies will have a larger effect. According to a Reuters report on the BoJ, there could be additional yen increases in the future. Be prepared for either possibility at this point and remain calm. Remember, the pair traded above 218 in July. So, 212 is still well below the summer highs. Our swing trading guide can help with stops. Will the pound clear 212, or will the BoE let it down?
