Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has set December 2028 as an aspirational target for completing Ethereum ’s post-quantum and post-AI transition. Speaking at Devcon 8 in Mumbai, Drake said developers have roughly 24 months to deliver three additional network upgrades. The proposed timeline would bring the transition forward from the Foundation’s existing December 2029 quantum-resistance target for Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers.

Drake’s comments do not formally replace the Ethereum Foundation’s published roadmap, which remains scheduled for reassessment in January 2027. The current plan includes staged work on post-quantum signatures, consensus protections and data-layer defenses as developers prepare Ethereum for cryptographic risks from sufficiently capable quantum computers. The December 2028 date therefore represents a more aggressive research target rather than a confirmed mainnet deadline.
The next milestone is the January 2027 roadmap reassessment, which should provide a clearer indication of whether the accelerated schedule can be incorporated into Ethereum’s formal development plan. Drake has previously outlined production-ready leanVM technology for 2027 followed by post-quantum deployments across Ethereum’s three layers in 2028. Delivering those upgrades on schedule will determine whether the earlier transition target remains feasible.
