Earnings Night for a Tech Giant

Microsoft, with few stocks more laden with Wall Street’s AI hope, reports fiscal first quarter results after the close tonight. The stock closed Tuesday at $531.33, about 4% below its 52-week peak of $553.72. Analysts are looking for earnings of near $4.71 a share, while management guided to revenue of between $89.85 billion and $90.95 billion with Azure growth expected around 45%found via Microsoft investor relations . With so much riding on one report, let’s see what the chart says before the numbers land.

Reading the MSFT Chart

MSFT daily chart: 20-day and 50-day averages, resistance at $535 and $553.72, support at $515.70. Illustrative chart drawn to published levels; not live exchange data.

Days Microsoft closed higher are shown in blue candles; days it closed lower, orange. 20-day is the yellow line and 50-day is the green line. They both slope up, price is just below the first one and just above the second. The resistance ($535 and the $553.72 high) are shown by orange dashed lines and green dashed line support (at $515.70, the 23 October low↑). Look at that level and the bounce off it:

each pullback has been bought at a higher price, building a staircase of higher lows . The dotted arrows sketch the two outcomes traders are weighing after earnings.

The AI Trade and the Risk Beneath It

Microsoft doesn’t trade in isolation. AI enthusiasm lifted the stock about 40% over three months by mid-October, yet chip and AI names have wobbled lately, which we examined in Is a market crash finally ripe? and AI chip selloff deepens as Micron slides . Spending is the other watch-item, with capital expenditure guided above $50 billion this quarter. The SEC’s EDGAR database will carry the full filing.

What the Numbers Need to Show

Headline profit alone rarely moves markets. The last report sent shares flying almost 15%, so the bar is raised this time. There are three things investors will key on: does Azure growth land around or above the 45% guide — more importantly any “CgAP” added paid seats to Microsoft 365 Copilot above the previously reported figure of 30 million — and whether spending remains disciplined relative to revenue.

A solid print may confirm the rich multiple, although any sign that growth lags behind expenditure could produce swift profit-taking-a risk given that the relative strength index neared oversold territory early in October. Options markets are always priced for some big move around results and, as such, tend to be a binary high risk, high reward event. One quarter changes little for long-term holders. Professional traders may bide their time until they see the initial opening reaction play out. Whatever the resolution to tonight, keep in mind that the chart updates long after the headlines do, and a tranquillity pen on paper plan always beats a rushed reaction at 100% full scale pressure.

Your Post-Earnings Playbook

Do not chase the first move as earnings gaps can blow through levels in seconds. A close above $535 leaves $553.72 in contention, while a break below $515.70 would put the averages into view.
