TL;DR

Midnight published a report addressing digital privacy as an essential requirement for communicating, transacting, and organizing.

The network proposes using smart contracts with programmable privacy and zero-knowledge proofs to protect personal information without preventing legitimate audits.

Its architecture supports private and transparent transactions, data verification without disclosing complete documents, and the generation of cryptographic proofs directly on users’ devices.

Midnight published a report warning about the risks that state surveillance, mass data collection, and cyberattacks pose to the privacy and autonomy of internet users.

The project argues that people need tools to communicate, transfer money, and organize without constantly exposing their personal information to third parties.

According to Midnight, public blockchains have limitations because transaction histories, account balances, and other information are publicly accessible and can be used to identify or track users .

However, the project also acknowledges that completely concealing information on a network can make audits and regulatory compliance more difficult .

Midnight Proposes Smart Contracts With Programmable Privacy

To address these limitations, Midnight is developing infrastructure based on programmable privacy , allowing developers to define specific rules governing which information remains protected and which data can be disclosed .

Developers can embed these rules directly into open-source smart contracts , ensuring that compliance is enforced through cryptographic mechanisms rather than discretionary decisions by intermediaries.

One of the technologies used is zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs , which make it possible to verify specific facts without revealing all the underlying information .

For example, a user could prove that they meet an age or eligibility requirement without submitting complete identity documents .

Midnight also includes a local cryptographic proof generation system , designed to keep original personal data on the user’s device rather than requiring it to be sent to external servers.

Combining Private and Transparent Transactions

Midnight’s architecture supports both shielded and unshielded tokens on the same network.

Shielded tokens conceal information related to transactions , while unshielded tokens maintain public records when necessary.

The project also uses verifiable state management mechanisms to coordinate private operations with public blockchain rules without disclosing the associated personal data.

Midnight believes these tools can be used for business communications, payments, governance systems, and organizations that need to protect the identities of their participants.

The foundation also announced that its next publication will examine the use of decentralized networks and privacy tools by civil society organizations and democracy advocates , particularly in situations where surveillance could put their members at risk.
