PG&E Foundation Awards Scholarships to 57 STEM Students

The PG&E Foundation awarded scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 through its Better Together STEM Scholarship Program. The program supports students across PG&E’s California service area, including those attending eligible Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Since 2012, the initiative has provided nearly $8 million to students pursuing higher education.

PG&E shareholders fund the scholarship program, and the company does not recover these expenses through customer rates. The foundation selects recipients based on academic performance, financial need, leadership, and participation in community activities. Additionally, eligible students can reapply annually for scholarship support for up to five years.

The foundation aims to help students develop technical skills and pursue careers across STEM-related industries. Its scholarship program also supports students seeking opportunities to address challenges within their communities. Furthermore, the initiative provides financial assistance to students attending accredited institutions while pursuing their first undergraduate degrees.

UC Berkeley Students Receive Financial Support

Among the recipients, Quennel Kempe of Fresno received $5,000 to support computer science studies at UC Berkeley. Meanwhile, Caden Kelly of Shingle Springs secured $2,500 while pursuing electrical engineering at the same university. Both students represent California communities within PG&E’s service territory.

Kempe highlighted the scholarship’s role in supporting academic goals and reducing financial pressure during college. Similarly, Kelly emphasized how financial assistance creates more opportunities to focus on education and community service. Their experiences reflect the program’s focus on helping students complete their studies and pursue technical careers.

For the 2026-2027 academic year, applicants must plan to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at eligible institutions. The foundation recently expanded eligibility to HBCUs after more applicants gained admission to those institutions outside California. This change broadens educational opportunities while maintaining the program’s focus on students from PG&E’s service area.

PG&E Employee Groups Expand Scholarship Support

Beyond the foundation’s program, PG&E employees also contribute to scholarships through 11 employee resource groups and three engineering networking groups. These groups raise funds through direct contributions, fundraising activities, and the company’s Campaign for the Community program. Since 1989, their scholarship efforts have generated more than $6 million for thousands of students.

The employee-funded scholarships complement the foundation’s broader efforts to support education and technical workforce development. Together, these programs provide financial assistance while encouraging students to pursue careers in engineering, technology, and related fields. PG&E continues these education initiatives alongside its utility operations across California.
