TL;DR
Robinhood reports rising demand for Bitcoin, gold and crude oil prediction markets as traders expand beyond sports-related contracts.
Federal Reserve interest rate decisions and short-term crypto price movements are attracting increased attention, with some Bitcoin contracts settling within 15 minutes .
Prediction markets could become a major growth engine for Robinhood by introducing users to its broader cryptocurrency, stock, futures and retirement investment services .
Robinhood is seeing increased trading activity in Bitcoin and gold prediction markets as investors seek new ways to express their views on financial assets. The trend reflects a broader expansion of event-based trading, where cryptocurrency prices, commodities and economic decisions are becoming increasingly popular alongside traditional sports contracts.
Growth In Bitcoin And Gold Prediction Markets
JB Mackenzie, Robinhood’s vice president and general manager of futures and prediction markets, identified Bitcoin, gold and crude oil price contracts as some of the platform’s fastest-growing products . Speaking at the NEXTPredict conference in New York, he explained that financial market events are attracting a growing share of trader interest.
Although sports remains Robinhood’s largest prediction market category, demand for contracts linked to asset price movements is changing the platform’s trading mix. Investors can use these contracts to take positions on whether an asset will reach a specified price or cross a particular threshold within a defined period.
For crypto-focused traders, this format offers another way to engage with Bitcoin price movements without directly purchasing or holding BTC . However, these contracts carry their own risks and do not provide the same ownership rights as holding the underlying cryptocurrency.
Robinhood offers prediction markets through its partnership with Kalshi, a federally regulated US event-contract exchange . The sector has expanded into financial and economic indicators, giving users more opportunities to trade expectations about market developments.
Shorter Bitcoin Contracts Attract Traders Seeking Faster Exposure
The growing interest also reflects demand for contracts with shorter settlement periods. Mackenzie said some cryptocurrency -related products have evolved from weekly timeframes to daily contracts and, more recently, periods as short as 15 minutes .
These shorter intervals allow traders to respond to rapid price changes, but they also leave less time for market movements to reverse an unfavorable position. Their risk profile can resemble that of short-dated options, although the instruments operate under different structures .
Economic events are also generating substantial activity. Mackenzie said Robinhood’s largest event contract in September concerned the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision rather than a sporting event. Such contracts give traders a way to position themselves around monetary policy announcements that can influence Bitcoin, equities, gold and other assets.
