With the U.S. midterm elections on the horizon, attention is turning to the S&P 500 and how the benchmark index could react to the polls.

In this context, historical data offers a bullish signal for investors , with the index averaging a 17.2% return in the year after midterm elections since 1950, according to Silvia Insights shared by Barchart on October 12.

The analysis covers 19 presidential cycles and shows that the third year of the cycle, which follows midterm elections, has historically delivered the strongest average return.

The S&P 500 was already up 13.56% in 2026 through October 5, adding to investor interest in the index’s prospects for 2027.

The S&P 500 has historically performed differently across the four years of the U.S. presidential cycle, with the midterm year recording the weakest average return.

Data from 1950 through 2025 show that the index gained an average of 8.4% in the first year of the cycle, 4.6% in the midterm year, 17.2% in the following year, and 8.1% in the presidential election year.

The figures suggest that 2027 could offer a favorable backdrop for U.S. stocks. However, the historical averages are based on 19 observations for each cycle year and do not guarantee similar returns.

The analysis measures price returns and excludes dividends, making it a historical comparison rather than a total-return forecast.

Notably, the S&P 500’s performance after the November 3 midterm elections will depend on corporate earnings, interest rates, and economic conditions.

Strong technology earnings and continued AI investment could support further gains, but high valuations and doubts about returns on AI spending could trigger a correction.

Treasury yields also remain a risk. Higher yields increase borrowing costs and make bonds more attractive relative to stocks.

Persistent inflation could limit the Federal Reserve’s ability to cut rates, putting further pressure on valuations.

The election outcome could also shift expectations for corporate taxes, tariffs, government spending, and regulation. However, the market reaction will depend on the policies at stake and how much investors have already priced in.

Overall, the S&P 500’s historical return after midterm elections offers a positive signal for 2027, but does not guarantee similar gains.

Further upside will depend on strong earnings, economic growth, and stable interest rates, while an AI sell-off, persistent inflation, or rising Treasury yields could derail the rally.

Ultimately, the index’s performance will depend on market conditions and how investors respond to the November elections.
