Asian stock markets rose Wednesday, mostly thanks to strong gains in tech and semiconductor companies. European markets were more cautious, and U.S. futures suggested a mixed open, with investors waiting for the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement and major tech earnings.

Markets traded carefully worldwide. U.S. Treasury yields stayed high, hovering near 5%, and investors awaited upcoming central bank interest rate decisions globally.

Asia’s Advances Driven By Chip and AI Optimism

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index closed up 1.08% at 63,954, boosted by semiconductor stocks. South Korea’s Kospi jumped over 6% after memory chip maker SK Hynix announced a quarterly profit that nearly tripled, far exceeding analyst expectations.

These strong results boosted confidence in the ongoing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index ended slightly up. Major Chinese stock indices also gained, with the Shanghai Composite rising about 0.9%. Technology, robotics, and semiconductor equipment shares led a recovery after two slower trading days.

The region’s performance mirrored Wall Street’s AI-fueled rally the day before. There, chip stocks benefited from news of substantial financing deals tied to AI computing power.

Europe Trades with Restraint

European markets started softer. In early trading, Germany’s DAX index fell 0.2%, France’s CAC 40 dropped 0.1%, and the UK’s FTSE 100 lost 0.4%. Europe isn’t as directly exposed to the recent memory chip surge, so Asia’s positive sentiment did not quite carry over.

Rising oil prices put a damper on market sentiment, alongside the upcoming Federal Reserve decision later in the U.S. trading session. Energy stocks saw prices fall, even as some industrial and technology companies managed to gain ground.

US Pre-Market Sends Mixed Signals

Wall Street had some momentum going into the day. Tuesday, the S&P 500 climbed 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.18%, partly thanks to Broadcom’s chip financing deal for Anthropic .

This morning, U.S. index futures looked varied before the market opened. Nasdaq-100 futures were up about 0.3% to 0.5%, a sign that tech stocks still appealed to investors.

S&P 500 futures barely moved, staying mostly flat or slightly positive. Meanwhile, Dow Jones futures dropped about 0.2%. U.S. futures struggled to keep pace with Asia’s gains, partly due to higher oil prices.

Commodities: Oil Still the Wild Card

Crude oil prices quickly became a major worry . Brent crude went over $116 a barrel, and WTI crude topped $102 after news broke of a Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery. Reports of possible U.S. strikes on Iran following the midterm elections also pushed prices higher.

Gold price stayed above $4,050 per ounce, but it did not gain much ground while markets waited for the Federal Reserve’s decision.

What Happens When Markets Open

As New York trading begins, tech stocks are expected to boost the session. Later today, after the market closes, Microsoft and Alphabet will release their earnings reports.

These companies, along with Amazon, plan to invest heavily this year. Their results will show if that spending is driving growth. The biggest risk to a stable trading day is a sharp jump in oil prices.

What drove the strong performance in Asian markets today?

Semiconductor and AI-related stocks led gains, especially after SK Hynix reported sharply higher quarterly profit. That news helped push South Korea’s Kospi up by more than 6% and boosted the Nikkei.

How did European indices fare relative to Asia?

European markets traded more cautiously. The FTSE 100 was slightly lower, and the DAX stayed near flat. Higher oil prices and the approaching Fed decision limited risk appetite.

Why are oil prices rising?

Brent topped $115 after a reported Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery and talk of possible renewed US strikes on Iran.
