TL;DR:
Wells Fargo and 20 international financial institutions plan to establish a joint venture in the second half of 2026 to launch a U.S. dollar-pegged digital token during the first half of 2027.
The financial institution reported a net income of $5.95 billion for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, marking a year-over-year increase compared to the $5.59 billion logged in 2025.
In September 2026, the bank rolled out tokenized deposits on its proprietary network for commercial and corporate clients, initially targeting cross-border settlements between U.S. dollars and British pounds.
Wells Fargo plans to roll out a stablecoin in the first half of 2027 through an international banking consortium, as detailed by its Chief Executive Officer, Charlie Scharf, during the corporate earnings call held this October 13, 2026.

Scharf noted that while the bank continues to advance its blockchain -based payment infrastructure, the long-term domestic use cases for these assets across the United States remain uncertain.
The consortium’s roadmap outlines the formation of a dedicated entity during the second half of 2026. Member banks plan for the initial token to maintain a 1:1 peg with the U.S. dollar, with subsequent assessments targeting Group of Seven ( G7 ) currencies, led by the euro for European deployment.
The initiative is designed to serve retail, commercial, and institutional market segments, focusing primarily on digital asset settlement and cross-border transactions.
Among the 21 participating institutions are U.S. firms such as Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Capital One, Fidelity Investments, and WisdomTree . Internationally, the consortium’s official report released on September 1 confirmed the involvement of Deutsche Bank, Santander , BBVA, Lloyds Banking Group, UBS, MUFG, Standard Bank, and Sirius International Holding.
Project members stated that the offerings will be structured in full compliance with the GENIUS Act within the United States and the Markets in Crypto-Assets ( MiCA ) regulatory framework across the European Union.
Expansion of Tokenized Deposits and Interbank Networks
Alongside the stablecoin project, Scharf confirmed that Wells Fargo rolled out tokenized deposit services in September 2026 for its commercial clients. The infrastructure allows for 24/7 programmable fund transfers within the bank’s internal operational architecture.
Institutional data previously shared in August 2026 showed that the pilot corridor settles between U.S. dollars and British pounds for corporate accounts operating in the United Kingdom.
The technical foundation of the initiative leverages Cosmos distributed ledger technology. Executive statements from Cosmos commercial leadership in September 2026 highlighted a network of 17 infrastructure vendors handling custody, wallet governance, and regulatory compliance under bilateral service agreements managed by each participating bank.
Wells Fargo is also part of a multilateral initiative led by The Clearing House alongside JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Citigroup. Technical documentation published in July 2026 indicates that this shared deposit network seeks to link conventional payment channels with distributed ledgers to streamline corporate liquidity management.
On the financial front, Wells Fargo posted total revenue of $21.87 billion for the third quarter of 2026, up 2% from the $21.44 billion recorded during the same period in 2025. Diluted earnings per share came in at $1.87, compared to $1.66 at the close of the prior year’s third quarter.
The bank’s corporate calendar targets expanding supported currencies and regional coverage on its deposit platform throughout 2027, coinciding with the anticipated launch window for the consortium-backed digital currency.
