- Trinity Rodman makes no mistake. She's the face of women's soccer. - You just cannot stop Trinity Rodman. - With millions of followers on Instagram and TikTok, a celebrity boyfriend, and an ad deal with Adidas, Trinity Rodman is a breakout star. And for now, the highest paid female soccer player in the world. - Trinity Rodman became a global superstar at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She is now the face of the league. - I don't think I would be who I was in this league right now if it weren't for the fans. - She is one of the most sought after female athletes in the world. - But Rodman's path to athletic riches wasn't a smooth one. Women's soccer is undergoing growing pains, and it was her own league that threatened to hold her back. - She told us that it started to feel a little bit more real, that, wow, I actually might have to play somewhere else other than the Washington Spirit. - Everyone knows professional sports is big business, and the National Women's Soccer League, or NWSL, is no exception. The league is estimated to be worth $2.8 billion, and Rodman's team, The Washington Spirit, ranks in the top five of the most valuable franchises. - Trinity Robin came into the league in 2021. She signed, at that time, one of the biggest contracts ever, a four-year deal worth a million dollars. So when she came into free agency in 2025, this was going to reset what she already had previously done. - This reset was negotiated between her and the Washington Spirit. The only problem was it was rejected by the league. - The league rejected the deal because they said it was not within the spirit of the CBA. - In 2024, a CBA or a collective bargaining agreement was signed by the Players Association and the league. It pegged salaries to revenue growth. Although it established a floor for average player salaries, for Trinity, it meant a low ceiling. To understand why it's useful to look at other sports and regions. - The NWSL's salary cap is $3.5 million for 2026. - That's $3.5 million for the entire team's roster. Compare that to the NBA, which caps roster pay at nearly $165 million. Rodman's value meant the math didn't work, and she had options. - The Women's Super League in England is not more popular per se, but they do have a few teams that actually spend money to get big name players. English clubs or European clubs in general can pay more because they don't have a salary cap at all, and it's really up to their owners on what they want to spend. - Fearing Rodman would get a better deal to play overseas, the Spirit offered her a backloaded deal that paid less upfront and more later. But when the league rejected it, no one was happy, not the league, the players, or Rodman's agent. - I just couldn't leave my home in a weird way, and there was too many boxes I still wanted to check before I'd made a decision that brought me away from kind of where I got drafted and where I grew up to be who I am now. - Enter plan B, the Rodman rule. - Instead of raising the salary cap, the league created what they call the high impact player rule, which allows teams to spend up to $1 million outside of the salary cap. It allowed for Trinity Rodman to sign a deal with the Washington Spirit. Her current contract is now over $2 million a year annually. - The situation echoes the Beckham rule, which allowed the LA Galaxy to sign David Beckham way back in 2007. So is this a happy ending? Well, not quite. The Players Association has issues with the high-impact player rule. The group is saying that the league can't implement a new way of paying players without the Players Association's consent, and that would require a new CBA. What the league could do is raise the salary cap entirely, and the Players Association says it's confused why they didn't just do that. What all this means for the future of the league remains to be seen. For now, Rodman will continue to play in the US and continue to inspire soccer fandom. If Rodman hits her goal, it could be a win-win for all. - Once Trinity and Rodman signed, we saw other players use the high-impact player rule right after her. This deal really set up the league to be able to pay big name stars that were playing overseas and compete with the global labour market.
