What Anthropic’s IPO Means for the AI Trade
Show transcript
Is this then a defining moment for the AI trade? Yeah. I think it is. And and not just the AI trade, I think, actually, in terms of, the kind of companies that are coming to public markets. I mean, first, if you look at the AI trade, obviously, Anthropic, is one of the leading frontier model developers, and so that's very much a first. And it's also... Its outlook is very much driven by enterprise demand for AI based solutions. And I think that's one of the things that's been making people a little bit skittish recently is is that momentum in enterprise spending really coming through? And I think the fact that Anthropic is going through with the IPO suggests that they feel they've got a confident story to talk on that opportunity. I think if you look more broadly, know, Anthropic is what's called a public benefit corporation. It's not just about seeking profit maximization. It has specific public benefit goals that it has to balance against those profit seeking goals too. And so I think that's a very different kind of organization. They're very clear and upfront in their prospectus, about those kind of slightly conflicting values and and north stars, if you like, if they've got to manage against. And you're cautioning investors that, you know, they might see things or decisions they make that perhaps wouldn't be what they'd expect from a typical public company. So it's a kind of very unique opportunity, I think. Can Anthropic justify a valuation well above $1,000,000,000,000, Matt? Yeah. I mean, I guess, ultimately, that... That's a question for investors to decide. Obviously, their last funding round, was valued for the company just below 1,000,000,000,000. Recently, there's been told that they could, fetch a valuation of, $2,000,000,000,000 or more. But, actually, recently, investor expectations have come back a little bit. Our own reporting suggests that maybe investors are thinking now maybe something around the $1,500,000,000,000 mark. There aren't really many benchmarks out there to kind of value this against. Probably the the the one obvious one might be SpaceX, came to market earlier this year. That trades on about 13 times forward sales. I think the consensus number for, Anthropic is about a $145,000,000,000 of forward sales. So, you know, that would kinda give you a reference to to to basins again, but then you... Again, you have these kind of IPO discounts, perhaps public benefit corporation discounts, which should kinda bring you back down maybe into the kind of, you know, one to one point five trillion range. But as I said, it's really gonna be down to investors and and how they judge the pitch they hear from the management team.
