Major U.S. banks are moving to block AI agents after finding unauthorized bots working inside customer accounts.

Some of those agents have tried to take actions that appear to go beyond what account holders asked for, reports Axios, citing people familiar with the matter.

JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley are among the banks scrambling to contain the risks agents pose.

In most cases, the agent gets in because the customer hands over their own username and password so an AI assistant can handle tasks for them.

Even with the customer’s permission, that breaks the rules at most banks, which require people to log in to their own accounts.

Bank executives are worried about what an agent with login access could do, especially if the user has given it the power to make purchases or move money.

Some banks have also tracked agents calling their customer service centers.

Bank executives describe the situation as horrifying, with one official saying the industry has grave concerns about agents getting into accounts and taking steps that could affect customers’ finances.

Morgan Stanley has started blocking third-party AI agents from its platforms, while JPMorgan, Bank of America and Citi are also restricting them.

A Morgan Stanley spokesperson says the bank has not seen instances of “rogue AI agents accessing our platforms.”

A Chase spokesperson says customers should not give their usernames and passwords to anyone.

Most banks have allowed, or are moving toward allowing, read-only access that lets agents see account information without taking any action, similar to what budgeting apps like Quicken already get.
