HSBC has launched its first stablecoin, RedCoin (RCHKD), through its PayMe payments app in Hong Kong, bringing bank-issued digital money within reach of more than 3.3 million existing users.
According to the bank’s October 23 announcement , customers will be able to activate a stablecoin wallet directly within PayMe, allowing them to send Hong Kong dollar-denominated tokens to friends and family and make payments at more than 100,000 merchants.
The rollout will take place in stages, making RedCoin one of the first regulated stablecoins issued by a major international bank for everyday consumer transactions.
HSBC received its stablecoin issuer license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in April, alongside Anchorpoint Financial, a consortium backed by Standard Chartered, HKT and Animoca Brands. The licenses were the first granted under Hong Kong’s new stablecoin regulatory framework.
RedCoin is backed by high-quality liquid assets held in segregated accounts, according to HSBC, with custody services provided by the bank’s digital assets division.
The bank plans to expand the service to its main Hong Kong mobile banking application later this year. Customers will eventually be able to use RedCoin to subscribe to tokenized investment products, including a new share class of HSBC’s existing Hong Kong dollar money market fund.
HSBC is also exploring corporate and institutional applications for the stablecoin.
The launch comes as traditional financial institutions increasingly explore blockchain-based money. In Britain, major banks including HSBC have begun testing tokenized deposits in live customer transactions , using digital representations of conventional bank deposits rather than separately issued stablecoins.
RedCoin represents a different approach, bringing a regulated digital currency directly into an established retail payments network.
Its significance lies less in the technology itself than in its distribution: millions of consumers can potentially access stablecoin payments without opening accounts on cryptocurrency exchanges or downloading specialized wallets.
