TL;DR

Spot Bitcoin ETFs received $241.1 million during the last week, while Ethereum ETFs recorded outflows of $138 million.

Bitcoin maintains a simpler institutional narrative, based on its scarcity and its role as a potential store of value.

Ethereum needs to prove that the growth of DeFi, stablecoins, and tokenization can translate into greater institutional demand for ETH.

The recent divergence between Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs offers a very particular signal about how institutional capital is pricing the two main assets in the market.

During the last week, spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States received $241.1 million , extending their inflow streak to three weeks. Ethereum products, on the other hand, recorded outflows of $138 million after having received an injection of $690 million the previous week.

The difference does not demonstrate on its own that institutions have lost interest in Ethereum. But it does raise a crucial question: which asset offers today a proposition that is easier to understand for a traditional investor seeking exposure to the crypto market?

Bitcoin Holds a Simpler Institutional Narrative

Bitcoin has an advantage that is difficult to replicate: its narrative can be explained without needing to introduce too many variables. The comparison to digital gold, programmed scarcity, and its independence from the monetary policy of any country form a relatively compact structure for an institutional portfolio.

That does not mean BTC always behaves like gold or that its movements can be separated from macroeconomic conditions. In fact, flows in digital asset products continue to react to interest rate expectations and signals from the Federal Reserve . CoinShares had already noted that flows were following monetary policy expectations more than a structural conviction about the asset class.

But even within that macroeconomic sensitivity a difference emerges. When capital returns to the sector, Bitcoin appears to retain a privileged position as an exposure vehicle .

Monthly data partially reinforces this idea. Spot Bitcoin ETFs received $2.65 billion in September , their second-best monthly result since October 2025. Ethereum products also attracted capital, but far less: $832.4 million .

The question is not only how much money each product receives. It also matters what story can justify that capital injection .

Ethereum Must Convert Its Utility Into a Reason to Invest

Ethereum faces a different problem. Its proposition is far broader than Bitcoin’s: smart contracts, DeFi, stablecoins , tokenization, applications, and an infrastructure on top of which other markets can be built. Precisely for that reason, its institutional thesis is also harder to condense.

An investor who buys BTC can defend the position as exposure to a scarce digital asset with characteristics similar to a store of value. With Ethereum, the argument depends far more on the network’s activity, applications, and new infrastructure generating sufficient demand for ETH. That link does not yet appear so evident at an institutional scale.

The outflows recently recorded in the ETFs do not mean that narrative has failed. In fact, Ethereum products have accumulated approximately $1.5 billion in net inflows so far in 2026. The problem is that the capital remains far smaller than that managed by Bitcoin ETFs, which maintain an asset base approximately six times larger.

The next stage in Ethereum’s evolution may change that equation. Network upgrades , including the work around Glamsterdam , aim to improve its capacity and efficiency , while the growth of tokenization and stablecoins may reinforce the use of its infrastructure.

But those improvements need to become something the financial market can value clearly . That is the real challenge. Ethereum may have more use cases than Bitcoin and, at the same time, present a less defined investment thesis .

The Divergence May Be Temporary, but It Is an Important Signal

It would be premature to interpret one week of outflows as the beginning of an institutional abandonment of Ethereum. ETF flows can shift quickly, and the most recent inflows demonstrate that demand for ETH exists when conditions are favorable .

However, the current divergence is significant because it appears at a moment when investors are reassessing their exposure to digital assets . Bitcoin is managing to attract capital even as the market remains attentive to Fed decisions and macroeconomic conditions. That leaves Ethereum facing a different kind of demand.

The network does not need to compete with Bitcoin as if it were also a store of value. It needs to demonstrate that its role as infrastructure for onchain finance can generate a sufficiently clear narrative to justify the arrival of greater institutional capital over time.

If that connection is strengthened by upcoming upgrades and by the growth of stablecoins, tokenization, and the DeFi ecosystem, the current divergence could ultimately prove
