The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Virtual Currency Unit dismantled infrastructure behind a multinational crypto investment scam targeting Russian-speaking victims in the United States, authorities said on October 14. The operation disrupted 112 servers and 241 fraudulent domains, with the takedown striking at the technical backbone used to run the crypto scam .

Investigators said victims were drawn in through Russian-language Facebook ads, then guided by supposed investment advisers to fake crypto platforms where withdrawals were eventually blocked or conditioned on extra fees and taxes. The recovered infrastructure also showed a second-stage recovery scam targeting previous victims, while authorities estimate tens of millions of dollars were stolen and have seized about $300,000 so far .

The Virtual Currency Unit worked with the FBI and other technical partners to seize or disable the infrastructure, after previously disrupting hundreds of related scam domains. The next focus is recovering additional stolen funds and preventing the network from rebuilding its operations , with investigators retaining server data, victim information and software that could support further enforcement.
