Altcoins are struggling to establish a broad recovery as Bitcoin dominance remains above 60% and traders prepare for a key Federal Reserve decision.
On October 26, Solana traded near $101, XRP around $1.29 and Cardano near $0.20. BNB was one of the few large-cap altcoins holding slightly positive on the day.
The weakness raises a familiar question: is an altcoin season approaching, or is capital still concentrated in Bitcoin and a small group of institutional favourites?
Altcoin Season Has Not Arrived Yet
The Altcoin Season Index is currently around 52, well below the 75 level generally associated with a broad altcoin season.
Bitcoin dominance, meanwhile, remains around 60%.
That combination suggests capital has not yet rotated decisively from Bitcoin into the wider altcoin market.
Recent trading reinforces that picture. Solana fell around 0.4% on October 26, while XRP and Cardano declined roughly 0.8%. BNB was nearly flat.
This is not the type of synchronized strength usually associated with a full altcoin cycle.
Solana Remains an Institutional Favourite
Solana is one of the clearest examples of how the altcoin market is becoming more selective.
US Solana ETFs had approximately $1.69 billion in assets as of October 21, with cumulative net flows of around $1.56 billion.
That gives SOL access to a source of institutional capital that many smaller altcoins do not have.
However, recent flows have weakened. Solana ETFs recorded several days of outflows during October before returning to a small positive flow on October 21.
The trend suggests investors remain interested in SOL, but are becoming more selective as broader risk appetite weakens.
Institutional Access Is Expanding Beyond Bitcoin
Traditional finance is also building more infrastructure around major altcoins.
CME Group’s Emerging Crypto Index now tracks ten assets excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum:
XRP, BNB, Solana, Hyperliquid, Chainlink, Stellar, Uniswap, Sui, Avalanche and Aave.
The development does not guarantee price appreciation, but it shows that institutional crypto exposure is expanding beyond BTC and ETH.
Rather than capital flowing indiscriminately across hundreds of tokens, institutional demand increasingly appears concentrated in a smaller group of liquid assets.
That could make future altcoin cycles very different from the broad rallies seen in previous crypto bull markets.
The Fed Could Decide the Next Move
The Federal Reserve meets on October 27–28, creating another major catalyst for crypto markets.
Economists widely expect the Fed to leave rates unchanged at 3.75%–4.00%.
However, persistent inflation means additional rate increases remain possible.
That matters particularly for altcoins.
Smaller crypto assets generally behave as higher-beta risk assets. When financial conditions tighten and Treasury yields rise, investors often reduce exposure to speculative assets first.
A more hawkish Fed message could therefore pressure SOL, XRP, ADA and other altcoins more heavily than Bitcoin.
A softer outlook could have the opposite effect by improving expectations for market liquidity.
What Would Confirm an Altcoin Season?
A few indicators would provide stronger evidence that a genuine rotation is beginning.
Bitcoin dominance: A sustained decline from current levels would indicate that capital is moving into other crypto assets.
Altcoin Season Index: A move above 75 would show that a much larger share of major altcoins is outperforming Bitcoin.
Market breadth: Gains would need to extend beyond a small group such as SOL, XRP and BNB.
Institutional flows: Continued demand for altcoin ETFs and regulated products would strengthen the case for a broader rotation.
For now, those signals remain mixed.
Altcoin Outlook
The altcoin market is not dead, but it is increasingly selective.
Institutional products are creating new demand for assets such as Solana and XRP, while CME benchmarks are bringing additional altcoins into traditional financial infrastructure.
At the same time, Bitcoin continues to command around 60% of the crypto market and the Altcoin Season Index remains below the level associated with a true market-wide rotation.
The Federal Reserve could provide the next major catalyst.
Until Bitcoin dominance starts falling and participation broadens across the market, 2026 looks more like a selective altcoin market than a full altcoin season.
