Altcoins are beginning to outperform Bitcoin again as traders rotate into higher-risk crypto assets while BTC remains stuck near the low-$80,000 range.

Bitcoin traded around $81,700 on October 23, gaining only around 0.5%, while the broader CoinDesk 80 index advanced approximately 1.4%.

Memecoins delivered the strongest move, climbing around 2.9%, with PEPE gaining roughly 13%, according to CoinDesk .

PEPE Leads the Latest Altcoin Bounce

PEPE emerged as one of the strongest performers in the latest market rebound.

The move reflects renewed demand for higher-beta crypto assets after several weeks of cautious positioning.

Memecoins often react more aggressively when market sentiment improves because they typically have higher volatility and more speculative trading activity than Bitcoin or Ethereum.

However, strong short-term gains in individual tokens do not automatically signal a full altcoin season.

For that to happen, gains would need to broaden across large-cap and mid-cap assets rather than remain concentrated in a small group of speculative tokens.

Celestia and Injective Have Also Outperformed

The latest rebound follows earlier strength in tokens such as Celestia and Injective.

On October 16, CoinDesk reported that Celestia jumped approximately 16%, while Injective gained about 7.7% and LayerZero rose more than 7%.

More than two-thirds of the CoinDesk 100 components were higher during that session.

That suggests the market has already seen several short bursts of altcoin outperformance during October.

The key question is whether those moves can develop into a sustained rotation.

DeFi Tokens Have Been Strong as Well

DeFi tokens have also participated in the recovery.

On October 19, the CoinDesk 80 gained around 1.3% while decentralized finance assets led the broader crypto market higher, according to CoinDesk .

The move came as global risk sentiment improved following stronger-than-expected Chinese economic data and a rebound in Nasdaq futures.

That relationship remains important.

Altcoins tend to perform best when investors are comfortable taking more risk across both crypto and traditional markets.

Bitcoin Still Controls the Broader Market

Despite recent altcoin gains, Bitcoin remains the dominant driver of crypto sentiment.

BTC has spent much of October around the $80,000–$84,000 range.

As long as Bitcoin remains relatively stable, traders may be more willing to move capital into smaller assets.

But a sharp BTC decline would likely interrupt the rotation.

Historically, some of the strongest altcoin periods have occurred when Bitcoin consolidates rather than moves aggressively higher or lower.

A stable Bitcoin price gives traders more confidence to search for returns elsewhere in the market.

Solana Still Has Institutional Support

Solana remains one of the strongest large-cap altcoins from an institutional-access perspective.

US Solana ETFs held approximately $1.69 billion in assets as of October 21, with cumulative net inflows of roughly $1.56 billion, according to SolanaFloor’s ETF tracker .

Recent daily flows have been mixed, but the size of the ETF market shows that institutional demand has expanded beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.

This could make SOL one of the key assets to watch if the broader altcoin rotation strengthens.

Is Altcoin Season Starting?

The latest market action is encouraging for altcoin traders, but there is not yet enough evidence to confirm a full altcoin season.

Several signals would strengthen the case:

broader gains across large- and mid-cap tokens;

declining Bitcoin dominance;

stronger trading volumes;

sustained institutional flows into assets such as Solana;

continued strength in DeFi and Layer-1 tokens.

For now, October looks more like a selective altcoin rotation than a market-wide breakout.

PEPE, Celestia, Injective and several DeFi assets have shown that traders are willing to take more risk again.

If Bitcoin can remain stable near current levels, that rotation could broaden further into the final weeks of October.
