Amazon plans to hire over 300,000 U.S. holiday workers, up 20% from last year. Meanwhile, Amazon (AMZN) stock gained 0.36% to $263.39, rising $0.94 amid volatility. The hiring plan contrasts with forecasts of weaker holiday recruitment across the wider U.S. retail industry.

Amazon Expands U.S. Holiday Hiring

Amazon will recruit employees across its U.S. core operations network for the upcoming holiday shopping season. The increase represents roughly 50,000 more seasonal positions than last year. Furthermore, Amazon will publish additional vacancies each week through December to fill positions.

The company’s operations network handles customer orders, warehouse processing, shipments, and deliveries nationwide. Seasonal employees will support these activities during the busy holiday rush. Amazon’s recruitment plan therefore covers the workforce supporting its fulfillment and distribution operations.

However, the broader retail employment outlook differs sharply from Amazon’s planned expansion this season. Challenger, Gray & Christmas projects fewer than 450,000 holiday hires nationwide. Its forecast points to seasonal retail hiring levels not seen since 2008, underscoring the difference.

Amazon Raises Pay and Expands Worker Benefits

Amazon offers average starting wages of about $20 hourly for seasonal workers in operations. Meanwhile, full-time core operations employees receive average hourly wages approaching $24. Amazon has also committed over $1.5 billion to wage increases for U.S. operations staff.

Including benefits, the company places average total compensation for full-time staff above $32 per hour. Amazon will expand healthcare coverage to eligible seasonal employees beginning January 1, 2027. Workers averaging at least 30 hours weekly can access healthcare plans starting at $5 per week.

Amazon also provides uncapped employee discounts for purchases from Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market. Alongside these benefits, Amazon plans to introduce greater access to low-cost credit union services for employees. The financial services rollout will extend into 2027 alongside other employment benefits.

AMZN Stock Gains During Volatile Trading

Amazon shares dipped below $261 early before renewed buying activity pushed the price higher. The stock briefly exceeded $264 before settling near $263.39, maintaining a gain of 0.36%. That movement placed AMZN above its previous price despite significant swings during trading.

The hiring initiative follows Amazon’s commitment to increase wages across its U.S. operations workforce. Together, these measures increase staffing and compensation spending before the busiest shopping period annually. Amazon will continue posting seasonal vacancies through December to fill additional jobs.

Amazon’s recruitment goal remains substantial compared with the broader forecast for holiday employment nationwide. Its announced pay and benefit changes also establish updated terms for qualifying staff. Meanwhile, AMZN’s reported price gain accompanied the company’s plans to expand holiday staffing.
