TL;DR

Binance deployed 7,499 BTC from its SAFU reserve, cutting the tracked balance in half while replenishing assets lost in the $6.3 billion breach.

The exchange says 95% of affected assets have been replenished, with tokens backed while less-liquid assets are being sourced through market and OTC transactions.

SAFU deployment replaces missing customer backing but does not equal recovery of stolen funds, which depends on tracing, freezing and retrieving attacker-controlled assets.

Binance has deployed 7,499 BTC from its Secure Asset Fund for Users as part of efforts to replenish assets lost in the $6.3 billion security breach . The public SAFU Bitcoin wallet held about 7,500 BTC on Monday, roughly half its pre-transfer balance of around 15,000 BTC. The move turns Binance’s emergency reserve structure into an active recovery tool rather than a passive protection fund.

SAFU Bitcoin Deployment Cuts Emergency Reserve Balance in Half

Binance confirmed that the 7,499 BTC transfer represented a partial SAFU deployment linked to replacing assets taken during the hack . The fund had been converted entirely into Bitcoin earlier in 2026, reaching roughly 15,000 BTC and a target value near $1 billion. That earlier SAFU conversion into Bitcoin made the reserve directly exposed to BTC price movements while preserving its role as a user-protection buffer.

The deployment occurred as Binance said it had replenished approximately 95% of the assets affected by the breach . The exchange had already restored full backing for BTC, ETH, USDT, BNB, SOL, USDC, XRP, USD1, RLUSD and ZEC, while continuing to source less-liquid tokens through market and OTC transactions. This replenishment is separate from attempts to recover the actual stolen coins, which remain part of asset-tracing and recovery efforts .

SAFU’s remaining Bitcoin balance introduces another question. The fund’s policy calls for rebalancing toward $1 billion if its market value falls below $800 million because of BTC price fluctuations , but it does not specify a deadline for replacing assets withdrawn after a security incident. With roughly 7,500 BTC remaining in the wallet and an estimated value near $583 million in the cited snapshot, the post-hack reserve now sits well below its previous size.

The recovery structure combines Binance corporate funds, SAFU reserves, a portion of its futures insurance fund and frozen stolen assets. Those sources perform different functions and should not be treated as recovered funds from the attacker . Issuer intervention has already immobilized part of the stolen stablecoins, as seen in the freeze of USDT and USDC linked to the breach , while SAFU deployment replaces missing assets using Binance-controlled reserves. The distinction matters for measuring recovery: replenishing customer backing restores platform solvency, whereas tracing and freezing stolen coins determines how much of the original loot can actually return. Binance has not disclosed a timetable for restoring SAFU to its prior Bitcoin balance.
