Bitcoin held near $83,000 on Wednesday after briefly reaching $84,000 during European trading, with investors waiting for the latest U.S. consumer price data. The reference snapshot placed BTC around $83,450 after Tuesday’s rebound from $80,970, while CoinMarketCap later showed Bitcoin near $83,345. The market has stabilized above Tuesday’s low, but the narrow recovery remains vulnerable as traders wait for the final inflation reading before the Federal Reserve’s October 28 decision. Total crypto market capitalization later stood around $2.8 trillion, with Bitcoin dominance near 59.86%. BTC therefore held firm despite softer broader momentum.
Bitcoin Dominance Rises as Leverage Cools Before CPI
The September CPI report is expected to show annual inflation accelerating to 3.6% from 3.4%, making the release a key test for rate expectations. New York Fed President John Williams had said he saw no need for rate increases in 2027, while leaving open the possibility of another move this year. Bitcoin’s relative stability reflects a market waiting for macro confirmation rather than aggressively positioning for a clear directional breakout. That caution follows recent Bitcoin volatility around inflation and rates , when higher yields and macro uncertainty helped keep risk appetite constrained. Brent near $106 added another macro variable.
Altcoins remained weaker than Bitcoin. In the reference snapshot, Ether slipped back toward $2,500 , XRP moved further below $1.40 and Solana fell toward $107 , while several larger-cap tokens posted deeper daily losses. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index declined to 55 from 60 a week earlier. The divergence reinforces the rise in Bitcoin dominance as capital remains more concentrated in BTC while broader risk appetite stays selective. Total market capitalization in the earlier snapshot was around $2.79 trillion. Most large-cap tokens nevertheless remained under pressure.
Derivatives positioning also looked calmer after the recent liquidation wave. Twenty-four-hour crypto futures volume fell 26% to $156.79 billion, aggregate open interest dropped 2.27% to $140 billion and liquidations declined more than 80% to $136.32 million. Shorts still represented 52% of taker flow, leaving a modest bearish tilt. Lower volume, falling open interest and sharply reduced liquidations suggest leverage is cooling rather than rebuilding quickly ahead of the CPI release. The setup extends the recent derivatives leverage reset and leaves traders watching whether inflation data can push Bitcoin beyond its current range or renew pressure across October’s unsettled market . Positioning therefore stayed cautious into the inflation print.
