The pound rose against the Chinese yuan on Friday as investors turned from Britain’s budget to next week’s Bank of England decision, although strength in China’s currency remained a constraint on sterling’s recovery. GBP/CNY was quoted at 8.9269, up 0.20%, after reaching an intraday high of 8.9314. The advance extended a recovery from earlier this week, with the pair moving back towards 8.93.

Sterling drew support from a relatively calm market response to Wednesday’s UK budget. Meanwhile, the yuan reached its strongest level against the US dollar in more than four years, supported by exporter dollar sales and a weaker greenback, according to Reuters reporting carried by The Economic Times.

GBP/CNY Exchange Rate Today

The GBP/CNY exchange rate of 8.9269 means one British pound buys approximately 8.93 Chinese yuan before conversion fees or a provider’s exchange-rate margin.

Friday’s quoted session range was 8.9096 to 8.9314, putting the pound near the upper end of its daily trading range. Historical pricing from Investing.com also showed gains on Wednesday and Thursday following Tuesday’s decline.

The recovery has brought 8.93 back into view, but the pair remains below levels around 8.95 recorded last week. That leaves sterling recovering lost ground rather than establishing a clear break higher.

UK Budget Eases Pressure on the Pound

Finance minister John Healey’s October 28 budget included higher taxes on banks, gambling, savers and landlords, alongside measures intended to soften the impact of rising energy bills. The government’s fiscal headroom narrowed to £15 billion from approximately £24 billion. Despite that smaller buffer, the announcement produced little disruption in currency markets, Reuters reported.

Investors broadly viewed the plans as leaving Britain’s fiscal position unchanged. That helped keep concerns about government borrowing from becoming a fresh source of pressure on sterling.

Barclays said the budget pushed perceived UK fiscal risks into the background, while BNP Paribas maintained a positive sterling-dollar position. Those assessments concerned the broader pound outlook, rather than a specific GBP/CNY target.

For the cross, the budget’s main contribution was to remove an immediate uncertainty. The next domestic catalyst is monetary policy.

Chinese Yuan Strength Limits GBP/CNY Upside

China’s onshore yuan traded around 6.6590 per dollar at 02:40 GMT on Friday, its strongest level since June 2022. It was heading for a fourth consecutive monthly gain.

Exporter conversions of dollar receipts into yuan helped support the currency. The People’s Bank of China also set its daily midpoint at 6.7138 per dollar, its strongest fixing since February 2023, according to the Reuters-based report.

That creates a competing influence for GBP/CNY. The pound can strengthen against the dollar while making less progress against the yuan if China’s currency is appreciating at the same time. The cross therefore depends on the relative performance of both currencies. Sterling’s post-budget stability alone does not establish the direction of the pair.

GBP/CNY Forecast: 8.93 Is the First Hurdle

Friday’s high near 8.9314 is the immediate reference for the recovery. A sustained move above that area would bring the previous week’s trading region around 8.95 into focus.

On the downside, 8.91 is the nearest reference, followed by the round-number 8.90 level. A retreat below those areas would weaken the recent rebound.

These are nearby price references rather than confirmed reversal signals. The stronger test will be whether sterling can maintain its gains while the yuan continues to attract demand.

Next week’s Bank of England message should help determine whether the pound has enough support to extend the recovery beyond its recent range.

Why is GBP/CNY rising?

The pair is recovering as sterling holds steady after the UK budget and investors anticipate a Bank of England rate increase.

What is the difference between GBP/CNY and GBP/CNH?

GBP/CNY measures sterling against the onshore yuan. GBP/CNH uses the offshore yuan, which trades under different market conditions and can carry a different price.

What is the pound-to-yuan exchange rate today?

GBP/CNY was quoted at 8.9269 on October 30, meaning £1 bought approximately 8.93 yuan before fees.
