Sterling has always been able to confuse trading communities. In one week, the Pound was at a 1-month high, then the following week the Pound was down due to concerns over the budget, and finally, the Federal Reserve set the tone from Washington. What does this mean for Cable? Let’s take a look at the charts together. The levels are much tighter than they appear.

Figure 1: GBP/USD key-level map in navy and red, built from published closes and levels (illustrative, not a live feed).

Reading the Chart

Follow the navy line. GBP/USD closed near 1.3390 on 22 October, dipped to 1.3299 on 28 October, then steadied at 1.3324 on 29 October, the red dot. That 1.3390-mark doubles as the 100-day moving average, the hurdle flagged in our Cable battles 1.3390 resistance analysis. Above, we can see the previous week’s top price of 1.3420, the 61.8% Fibonacci level of 1.3470 and the July-August tops of 1.3558, located inside the pink shaded area. Below, the dashed navy-blue lines indicate the level of 1.3250, the floor of 1.3194 that has held up seven times, and the October bottom of 1.3135, indicated in the grey-blue shelf. Daily Forex Analyst Christopher Lewis prefers buying on pullbacks toward 1.3250 in a range from 1.3150 to 1.3650. You may also notice how the 1.3390 dot and the 100-day moving average are nearly overlapping; this combination is what makes traders pay such close attention to this area.

Why It Matters

On 28 October the Fed held rates at 3.75% to 4% by a 10-2 vote, and the FOMC statement still says “Inflation remains elevated”, which keeps the dollar supported. Sterling’s counterweight is strength elsewhere: our pound on solid foundations piece notes GBP/EUR testing multi-month highs near 1.1850.

Fragility does exist, however, as evidenced by the September six-week low of UK borrowing concerns. In addition, the Bank of England rate remains at 3.75%, and according to Trading Economics, it should be approximately 1.34 at the end of the year and 1.37 in 12 months. This is an incremental upward move, not a guarantee. For investors, the conclusion is clear: A strong dollar and a conservative UK budget provide ceilings for rallies; however, each time 1.3194 has been defended, it indicates that there remain buyers.

Bull, Bear and Neutral Paths

• Bullish: A close on the day above 1.3420 would move to 1.3470 and potentially to 1.3558 as short positions are closed out.

• Bearish: A close below 1.3250 creates an opportunity for a move to 1.3194 and then the 1.3135 October low. There could be stop orders placed near those levels.

• Neutral: Expect volatility to occur within the range of 1.3250-1.3420 prior to the next major market event.

Short-term traders should respect the range, and swing traders can check

Pound Sterling Live’s 2026 history to see how long this box has lasted. Remember our bull trap warning from 1 October: wait for closes, not wicks. In short, the short-term outlook is range-bound, while the long-term outlook leans mildly higher if the Fed softens.

Quick FAQ

Is GBP/USD bullish or bearish right now?

Neutral to slightly higher as long as prices stay above 1.3250. If they drop below that level then the bulls lose control and the bears will be able to push prices lower.

Which GBP/USD level matters most?

1.3420, because a close above last week’s high would break the recent ceiling.

What moves Cable next?

Fed signals, UK budget headlines and the Bank of England’s tone. Gilt yields should also be monitored, as they can sometimes serve as an indicator for sterling.

Are you expecting the buyers to break above 1.3420, or do you think that 1.3250 will be broken first? Please indicate where each level is on the chart. Then determine how you want to handle the situation when either level is broken. Lastly, remember to manage your risks appropriately, and take another look at the chart tomorrow. This is educational, not financial advice.
