Hong Kong’s benchmark has had a miserable autumn. After closing at 25,274 on 9 September, the Hang Seng Index has lost roughly 8.6%, now hovering near 23,093 as tech wobbles, hawkish Federal Reserve expectations and oil above $100 squeeze risk appetite. Earlier this month we argued that China growth and the global tech selloff were pulling the index in opposite directions , and last week the bears won that tug-of-war. For CFD traders, who can profit from falling markets as easily as rising ones, that matters.

Hong Kong’s Autumn Slide in One Chart

Read the chart from left to right. Early candles show buyers lifting the index towards 24,525 on 14 October, but notice the long upper wick: sellers were waiting there. After that, every rally stalls lower, a staircase of lower highs. The purple line at 23,717 marks the early-October lows we flagged when the HSI was capped below 24,670 . The index first closed below it on 21 October, and then gapped lower at the open of 22 October floor to fall some 3.03 per cent or its largest single-day loss in seven months. The most striking message on the page is that silence. A classic sign is flipped support into resistance.

The Bounce is NOT the Breakout

Now look at the last candle – 23rd October. Started at 23,017, down to 22,804 then closing back up to 23,093 and long lower wick. Bulls defended territory just over the shaded 22,518 to 22,561 area where the June low and a one-year floor reside. Encouraging, but don’t over-read it. The bounce below broken support is a big waiting for confirmation, and there was death crossing in the middle of September as the 50-day average crossed below the 200-day with momentum leaning back towards sellers.

Overhead, 23,717, 24,234 and 24,670 are the hurdles, so treat rallies below them with suspicion until buyers prove otherwise. Tech giants carry heavy weight, so remember how fast sentiment flipped when Alibaba and tech stocks slid ahead of China’s market reopening .

Week Ahead: A CFD Game Plan

This is what the coffee conversation I would have sounds like: Many traders sell rallies into resistance in a downtrend instead of chase breakouts, while bulls are waiting for a daily close back above 23,717 to trust any recovery. A close below 22,800 sees 22,518 squarely. In either case, losses — as well as gains — are magnified because of the leveraged nature of CFDs, overnight finance mounts up, and at Hong Kong’s open the index can gap higher.

. Hang Seng futures are worth HK$50 per point , but your broker’s CFD point value may differ, so check before sizing. Place stops beyond the level that proves you wrong, risk only a small part of your account, and keep one eye on how oil near $100 hit the HSI in September . This is education only, not advice, so do your own research.
