When the Bundesliga takes a winter break, German sports halls fill up. Handball’s HBL and ice hockey’s DEL draw loud crowds from Kiel to Munich, and German expats follow both from wherever they now live.
Indoor sports offer a different betting rhythm from football. Handball produces high scores and frequent lead changes, while hockey brings period markets, power plays and overtime.
German rules for residents come first, followed by the markets that matter in each sport for fans living outside Germany.
Rules for German Residents
People living in Germany should use only sportsbooks on the GGL whitelist, the official register of licensed operators. Those books follow national limits on deposits and live betting.
Germans abroad follow the law of their country of residence and should confirm it before signing up anywhere.
Two Leagues at a Glance
Both leagues run through the winter, with playoffs or a title race deciding the spring. The table outlines the basics.

German handball and hockey both feature clubs with long winning traditions, from THW Kiel in handball to Eisbären Berlin and Adler Mannheim on the ice.
Handball Markets
Handball matches often produce more than fifty goals, so totals and handicaps dominate the menu. Half-time markets also matter, since teams frequently rotate goalkeepers and change tactics at the break.
Home advantage weighs heavily in the HBL, where tight halls and loud crowds unsettle visiting sides. Busy schedules with European competition and national team duty add rotation.
Squad Depth
Handball rewards deep squads, as players tire quickly at high intensity. Clubs with strong benches often pull away late, which matters for second-half markets.
Hockey Markets
DEL hockey offers moneylines, puck lines, totals and period markets. Goalie news moves prices more than almost anything else, and back-to-back weekend games often bring rotation.
Overtime rules decide settlement. Two-way markets usually count overtime and shootouts, while three-way markets settle after sixty minutes. CryptoDaily’s guide to NHL betting explains hockey markets that apply in Germany too.
Coverage and Kick-Off Times
Coverage for German indoor sports varies widely between sportsbooks. CryptoDaily’s comparison of multi-sport coverage helps fans check which books list these leagues.
DEL and HBL games often start in the evening, Central European Time, which means afternoons in the Americas and late nights in Asia. CryptoDaily’s piece on time zone betting offers tips for following European fixtures from afar.
Dexsport for Indoor Sports
Dexsport lists 21 ice hockey market types, including period results, total goals by period, time of first goal and come-from-behind wins. Those lines suit DEL games, though the menu for a given fixture varies.
Handball appears among the sports Dexsport covers, while its rules leave handball markets unlisted, so check the live menu before an HBL weekend. Dexapp LTD operates Dexsport under an Anjouan licence, outside the GGL whitelist, so Dexsport suits only fans abroad where local law allows it.
Conclusion
HBL handball and DEL hockey give German fans abroad a winter of indoor sport, each with its own betting rhythm. Handball centres on high totals, handicaps and half-time swings, while hockey turns on goalies, power plays and overtime.
Home advantage, squad depth and rotation shape handball prices, and goalie news moves hockey lines most. Coverage varies widely between sportsbooks, so checking the menu first helps.
Residents of Germany should use operators on the GGL whitelist. Fans abroad need to check the law where they live, bet only once they reach legal age and remember that KYC or AML checks may apply.
