A repeat bank fraudster who sent imposters into bank branches to drain victims’ accounts and cash stolen US Treasury checks has been sentenced to more than 16 years in federal prison.
Laquan Williams, 42, of Florham Park, New Jersey, was sentenced to 200 months in prison for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, says the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
Prosecutors say Williams ran a series of schemes between 2021 and 2024 that caused about $1.8 million in losses to financial institutions.
In one, he allegedly sent co-conspirators into banks in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to impersonate customers, including a prominent former federal government official.
In another, prosecutors say an imposter posing as small business owners got banks to move money into look-alike accounts that Williams controlled.
He also took part in depositing stolen Treasury checks, including one for $13.9 million at a Massachusetts bank, with intended losses topping $30 million, according to prosecutors.
When he was arrested in May of 2024, authorities say they found more than 1,000 stolen or altered checks, 571 counterfeit IDs, an ID card press, two pistols and ammunition.
Williams committed the crimes while on federal supervised release after a 64-month sentence in 2018 for a similar bank fraud scheme.
Says US Attorney Jamie McDonald,
“Laquan Williams is a bank fraudster who has stolen millions of dollars from Americans by engaging in identity theft and bank fraud. For nearly two decades, Williams has been stealing money from innocent bank customers with forged checks, counterfeit identification cards, and stolen personal identifying information. Today’s prison sentence protects New Yorkers and should be a reminder that we and our law enforcement partners will aggressively pursue serial fraudsters and hold them accountable.”
Williams was also ordered to forfeit about $1.8 million and pay restitution.
