The Mexican peso fell sharply on Tuesday as investors awaited the US midterm election results, reversing Monday’s gains and pushing the dollar back towards its recent highs.

USD/MXN traded at 18.8388 at 17:35 GMT, up 1.49%, after climbing from a session low of 18.5282. The advance brought the pair close to its intraday high of 18.8418 and put the psychological 19.00 level back in focus.

The move leaves the peso under pressure despite support from Mexico’s interest-rate advantage and stronger economic growth. With voting underway, investors are assessing how the next US Congress could influence fiscal policy, trade relations and demand for dollar assets.

Why Is USD/MXN Rising on US Midterm Election Day?

The dollar’s advance marks a sharp reversal from Monday, when the peso gained approximately 1.1%. Earlier on Tuesday, Mexican market reporting described cautious positioning as investors weighed the US congressional elections alongside persistent geopolitical risks. The subsequent rise in USD/MXN extended that retreat in the peso.

Mexico’s close trading relationship with the United States makes its currency sensitive to changes in Washington’s policy outlook. Investors must also consider broader dollar demand, bond yields and global risk appetite.

Tuesday’s price action shows that domestic support for the peso has been insufficient to prevent a substantial reversal. It does not establish which election outcome markets expect, or guarantee that the move will continue once results arrive.

How US Midterm Election Results Could Affect the Mexican Peso

The US midterm elections will determine control of Congress and could change the administration’s ability to advance tax and spending legislation.

For USD/MXN, one channel is US borrowing costs. Results that increase expectations for government borrowing or persistent inflation could lift Treasury yields and support the dollar. A different congressional balance could limit parts of the legislative agenda.

Trade policy is particularly important for Mexico. Investors will assess whether the outcome makes cooperation or confrontation over cross-border commerce more likely. However, congressional control alone does not determine tariff policy, since presidential authority also matters.

The currency response will depend on the results relative to expectations. A clear outcome could reduce uncertainty, while closely contested races could prolong cautious positioning.

anxico Interest Rate Outlook Keeps Carry Trades in Focus

Mexico’s benchmark rate stands at 6.50%. A central-bank survey published Tuesday showed private-sector analysts expecting it to remain unchanged through the end of 2027. The surveyed analysts also modestly increased their forecasts for Mexican growth and inflation.

Higher rates can attract capital into peso-denominated assets. However, Tuesday’s move illustrates the risk: a sharp depreciation can outweigh the interest earned from holding the currency. Investors will consequently assess the rate advantage alongside election developments and the outlook for US yields.

USD/MXN Technical Analysis: 19.00 Returns to Focus

USD/MXN has recovered above 18.80 and is trading near the session high of 18.8418. The recent peak around 18.93 is the next resistance area, followed by 19.00.

The rising 20-day moving average near 18.50 supports the broader upward trend established since September. Initial downside references are 18.80 and 18.60, followed by Tuesday’s low near 18.53 and the moving average.

Momentum is less decisive than the price advance. The MACD line remains above zero but below its signal line, with a slightly negative histogram. That suggests the broader uptrend has lost some momentum despite Tuesday’s rebound.

A sustained break above 18.93 would strengthen the case for a test of 19.00. A retreat below 18.80 would indicate that some of the election-day advance is fading.

Will the peso recover after the US midterm elections?

A recovery is possible if uncertainty eases and demand returns to higher-yielding currencies. Higher US yields or renewed trade concerns could limit those gains.

How could the US midterm election results affect the Mexican peso?

The results could shift expectations for US spending, trade policy and interest rates. Higher Treasury yields or greater trade uncertainty could pressure the peso, while a clearer policy outlook could help it recover.

Could USD/MXN reach 19.00 after the elections?

The next resistance area is around 18.93. A sustained break above it would put 19.00 within reach, although the election response could reverse as results become clearer.
