Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU ) stock plunged on Tuesday, October 13, as investors reassessed the outlook for the memory chipmaker.

As of press time, MU shares were trading at $937, down approximately 5.7% after falling 3.9% in the previous session.

The sell-off reflects growing concerns about competition in the memory chip market and the sustainability of the AI-driven rally in semiconductor stocks.

A key catalyst is the progress of Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), which has announced advances in a denser dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) architecture known as 4F².

The technology could allow manufacturers to fit more memory cells onto a chip, potentially lowering production costs. CXMT is also targeting a launch of DDR5 server memory products before the end of 2026, raising concerns about competition in a market where Micron has benefited from strong demand and tight supply.

The development has heightened concerns about Micron’s pricing power and profit margins. However, CXMT’s ability to manufacture the technology at scale and compete directly with established suppliers remains uncertain.

Micron also faces competition in NAND flash memory, with Chinese manufacturer Yangtze Memory Technologies expanding its presence in the global market.

Semiconductor stocks weakness

Micron’s decline comes amid broader weakness in semiconductor stocks as investors reassess AI-related valuations and spending expectations.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell approximately 3% on Tuesday, while other memory chipmakers, including SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, also suffered significant losses.

The weakness reflects concerns that intensifying competition could pressure the profitability of companies supplying memory and other components for AI infrastructure.

Comments from Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO ) chief executive Hock Tan about the risks of speculative AI investments have added to investor caution. Markets are weighing substantial AI infrastructure spending against the capital required to sustain that expansion.

These concerns are particularly relevant to Micron because memory chips are essential to AI servers, while the company’s valuation and earnings expectations depend heavily on demand and pricing in the sector.

Micron operational disruption

Micron also faces potential operational disruption in Taiwan, where employees have authorized a strike amid a dispute over profit-sharing arrangements.

According to Reuters , 99% of the 1,994 union members who voted supported strike authorization. The dispute concerns compensation following a strong financial year. A union rally was scheduled for October 19, although authorization does not mean a strike has begun.

Taiwan is a key production base for Micron, meaning a prolonged labor disruption could affect manufacturing and supply.

Despite the sell-off, demand for AI infrastructure continues to support Micron’s longer-term outlook. The company supplies DRAM, NAND flash, and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for advanced computing systems.
